For this school year the group plans to sell T-Shirts, post and handout flyers, set up tables outside of the University Center, and hopefully get a speaker to come to campus. Any other ideas would be appreciated. If you are a student, faculty, staff, or the general public and would like to get involved in the organization you can send an e-mail.

The use of cannabinoids as anticancer agents.
Velasco G1, Hernández-Tiedra S2, Dávila D2, Lorente M2.
Author information
Abstract
It is well-established that cannabinoids exert palliative effects on some cancer-associated symptoms. In addition evidences obtained during the last fifteen years support that these compounds can reduce tumor growth in animal models of cancer. Cannabinoids have been shown to activate an ER-stress related pathway that leads to the stimulation of autophagy-mediated cancer cell death. In addition, cannabinoids inhibit tumor angiogenesis and decrease cancer cell migration. The mechanisms of resistance to cannabinoid anticancer action as well as the possible strategies to develop cannabinoid-based combinational therapies to fight cancer have also started to be explored. In this review we will summarize these observations (that have already helped to set the bases for the development of the first clinical studies to investigate the potential clinical benefit of using cannabinoids in anticancer therapies) and will discuss the possible future avenues of research in this area.

It is likely, however, that drafts of the documents [Constitution, Declaration of Independence & Bill of Rights] were written on paper made from hemp. In that period, most paper was made from hemp or flax and a mixture of recycled rags and cloth.

Cannabis sativa comes in a male and female form. The male form is Hemp and the female form is marijuana. Hemp has been used for food and materials for thousands of years and contains virtually no THC, the most active chemical compound in marijuna that gives one a “high.” One cannot get high on hemp. Making hemp illegal would be like making poppy seeds illegal, since they can be grown to make opium or heroin, except that poppy crops aren’t nearly as useful and can make a much more dangerous drug.

***

It’s indisputable that the current prohibition of hemp stands in complete opposition to the vision of America’s Founding Fathers. In 1794, George Washington wrote, “Make the most of the Indian hemp seed, and sow it everywhere.” Additionally, Thomas Jefferson proclaimed, “Hemp is of the first necessity to the wealth and protection of this country.”

Cannabis sativa is extremely unusual in the diversity of products for which it is or can be cultivated. Popular Mechanics magazine (1938) touted hemp as “the new billion dollar crop,” stating that it “can be used to produce more than 25,000 products, ranging from dynamite to Cellophane.”

1930s

Fear of marijuana
During the Great Depression, massive unemployment increased public resentment and fear of Mexican immigrants, escalating public and governmental concern about the problem of marijuana. This instigated a flurry of research which linked the use of marijuana with violence, crime and other socially deviant behaviors, primarily committed by “racially inferior” or underclass communities. By 1931, 29 states had outlawed marijuana.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/dope/etc/cron.html

1916 – 1937 William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers introduced the word ‘marijuana’ into English from Mexican slang.

Hearst sold lots of newspapers using stories about “coloured” men using drugs to corrupt white women. Many of them allegedly carried big knives and would go wild at any provocation. New techniques for processing hemp for paper that pose a serious threat to his timber based paper businesses provide the motivation.

In 1916 the US Department of Agriculture calculated hemp would replace the need for cutting down trees for paper. It is also possible it can replace the need for petroleum.

Unfortunately in 1930s the production of Hemp was banned by the United States Government, under the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. Hemp fails under the act because it contains low levels of THC, which is a psychoactive ingredient found in hashish and marijuana (hemp does not contain an amount to produce any intoxicating effect, even in significant quantities). According to Jack Herer’s book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” the biggest supporter of the ban account was William Randolph Hearst, who coincidently had significant interest in the timber industry at the time. “In 1916 a USDA Bulletin (#404), reported that one acre of cannabis hemp, in annual rotation over a 20-year period, would produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees being cut down over the same 20-year period. This process would use only 1/4 to 1/7 as much polluting sulfur-based acid chemicals to break down the glue-like lignin that binds the fibers of the pulp, or even none at all using soda ash. The problem of dioxin contamination of rivers is avoided in the hemp paper making process, which does not need to use chlorine bleach (as the wood pulp paper making process requires) but instead safely substitutes hydrogen peroxide in the bleaching process. If the new (1916) hemp pulp paper process were legal today, it would soon replace about 70% of all wood pulp paper, including computer printout paper, corrugated boxes and paper bags.”

The following four quotes are from Thich Nhat Hanh whom was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. King, Jr., he has also been praised by Oprah Winfrey (“The Queen of All Media”):

“We recommended that the Palestinians and Israeli talk about their suffering, fears, and despair in a public forum that all the world could hear. We could all listen without judging, without condemning in order to understand the experience of both sides. This would prepare the ground of understanding for peace talks to occur.”

“The same situation now exists between the American people and people of Islamic and Arabic nations. There is much misunderstanding and lack of the kind of communication that hinders our ability to resolve our difficulties peacefully.”

“If I were given the opportunity to be face to face with Osama bin Laden, the first thing I would do is listen. I would try to understand why he had acted in that cruel way. I would try to understand all of the suffering that had led him to violence.”

“This past summer a group of Palestinians and Israelis came to Plum Village, the practice center where I live in southern France, to learn and practice the arts of deep listening and loving speech. (Around 1,600 people come to Plum Village each summer from over a dozen countries to listen and to learn how to bring peace and understanding to their daily lives.)… When a person spoke, they refrained from using words of blame, hatred, and condemnation. They spoke in an atmosphere of trust and respect. Out of these dialogues the participating Palestinians and Israelis were very moved to realize that both sides suffer from fear. They appreciated the practice of deep listening and made arrangements to share what they had learned with others upon returning to their home countries.”

“Thich Nhat Hanh offers a way out of this nightmare, a solution acceptable to rational leaders. He has traveled the world, counseling statesmen, religious leaders, scholars and writers, and enlisting their support. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity.“ -Martin Luther King, Jr.

“If you have not met frequently with the broad and deep Israeli peace movement, you might wish to change your routine so that you can play a part in the historic effort to establish a broad and deep peace between the two Semitic peoples. The exchanges should be videotaped and widely distributed to further the cause of peace and to witness Abraham Foxman dialoguing without his customary lines that evade the issues.” – Ralph Nader

“And that is why [because of nuclear proliferation] I support the idea of a joint US-Soviet cooperation…There’s a huge amount of exploration to do. And all of it, every step that I described, could be before the television cameras of the world, and we could all participate in such exploration. ” – Carl Sagan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKQQAv5svkk (35-38 mins.)

“You and I are both…I think we share the same viewpoint of many of Hillary Clinton’s policies…she is the candidate of empire. She is the candidate also of regime change, of humanitarian cruise missiles. I mean she is hardly the dovish opponent or sort of alternate choice to Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders supports the kill list. So we have three candidates all of whom have very serious issues that should be investigated and they should be held accountable for in front of the American public. Partisanship doesn’t allow that though.” – Jeremy Scahill on Bill Maher (2016)

“Look as I’ve said before, if the governments abided by their own weapons control laws world peace could truly be at hand. But they won’t, they never have and I respectfully submit they never will.”
-Sam Cummings (arms dealer)

“To understand the motives of the terrorists, we must listen to their grievances against the United States.”

Social Problems, Ninth Edition by D. Stanley Eitzen and Maxine Baca Zinn. 2004, Pearson Education Inc. p.540

“This book [“How to Win a Cosmic War”] is, above all else, a proclamation: the War on Terror, conceived by the previous American administration as a cosmic contest between the forces of good and evil for the future of civilization, is over. It is time to strip this ideological conflict of its religious connotations, to reject the religiously polarizing rhetoric of our leaders and theirs, to focus on the material matters at stake, and to address the earthly issues that always lie behind the cosmic impulse. For although the grievances of the hijackers may have been symbolic, though they may have been merely causes to rally around, to the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who watched the towers fall—who were, in fact, the intended audience of that theatrical display of violence—they are nonetheless legitimate grievances and must be addressed as such. The Palestinians really are suffering under Israeli occupation. Arab dictators are in fact being propped up by U.S. polices. The Muslim world truly does have reason to feel under attack by a “crusading” West.” (Aslan, 11)
“This crusade. This war on terrorism. Is going to take a while”
– George Bush
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010920-8.html
Crusade (noun): One of the medieval wars of religion waged by Christiansagainst Muslims.

“What ultimately led to the deradicalization of the Liberation Theology movement—or,for that matter, the environmental movement, the antiglobalization, the feminist movement, the black power movement, and so on—was the gradual co-option of their members’ grievances into mainstream society. Indeed, when it comes to dealing with a social movement, society has only two options: either it can address the members’ grievances, thereby making the movement irrelevant, or it can deflect those grievances and further radicalize the movement.” (Aslan, 139)

From Thich Nhah Hanh’s book “Vietnam: A Lotus in a Sea of Fire”

“Finally, if some may question why I ask the U.S. to take the first step, it is because the U.S. is militarily the strongest nation in the world. No one can accuse it of cowardice if it chooses to seek peace. To be a genuine leader requires moral strength as well as big guns. America’s history suggests that she has the potential to provide the world with leadership.” p. 114

“My solution wold be along the following lines.
A clear statement by the U.S. of its desire to help the Vietnamese people to have a government truly responsive to Vietnamese aspirations, and concrete U.S. actions to implement this statement, such as a refusal to support one group in preference to another.
A cessation of the bombings, north and south.
Limitation of all military operations by U.S. and South Vietnamese forces to defensive actions; in effect, a cease-fire if the Viet Cong respond in kind.
A convincing demonstration of the U.S. intention to withdraw its forces from Vietnam over a specified period of months, with withdrawal actually beginning to take place as a sign of sincerity.
A generous effort to help rebuild the country from the destruction which has been wreaked upon Vietnam, such aid to be completely free of ideological and political strings and therefore not viewed as an affront to Vietnamese independence.
Such a program if implemented with sufficient vigor to convince the now understandably skeptical Vietnamese people of its sincerity offers the best hope for uniting them in a constructive effort and for restoring stability of South Vietnam.” p.113

  2. Aloha Jacob,

Legalizing marijuana is a basic question of fairness and freedom of choice for the American people. A system that puts people in prison for marijuana use, while allowing corporations like Purdue Pharma that are responsible for thousands of opioid-related deaths to walk away scot-free with their coffers full, needs to change.

Let’s make that change—together. I’m offering to serve as your president to build a government of, by, and for the people. Click here to donate $5, $25 or $10 towards our people-powered campaign to make a real difference in the lives of Americans.

The fact that marijuana is still a Schedule 1 drug in this country—the same as heroin and other deadly narcotics—is unacceptable. Yesterday, I released two bills to tackle this. The first is a short, to-the-point bipartisan bill to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act so that states can set their own laws without interference.

The second requires the federal government to generate one central study on the impact of state marijuana legalization policies to push back against myths and stigma that are being used as excuses to perpetuate federal prohibition.

You deserve common sense, bipartisan legislation that actually has a chance to pass in a heavily divided Congress and make real, tangible impacts on our quality of life. We need leadership that will stay focused on getting things done for the American people, instead of playing political games.

Click here to donate $5, $25 or $10 or whatever you can spare to a campaign focused on common sense bipartisan solutions, including an end to the federal marijuana prohibition!

I didn’t suddenly wake up to this issue yesterday. The truth is, I don’t smoke pot and never have. I’m not here trying to look cool. I’m here to get things done for the good of the American people. I’m here to stand up for every person’s freedom to make their own choices.

60% of voters support marijuana legalization. If members of Congress and leaders in Washington listen to the voices of the vast majority of Americans, they will hear the calls for action that go beyond partisanship. We are long overdue to bring about this kind of change. We can’t afford to keep kicking this can down the road given the devastating negative impact it is having on the people of this country.

If you know someone who believes in the right of all Americans to make their own choice to use marijuana without being thrown in jail or labelled a criminal, please share this email and ask them to contribute—even just $1—to make sure our message makes it to the debate stage. We’re well on our way to the requirement of 65,000 unique donors, and it’s your enthusiasm and willingness to share our message with your friends and family that will get us over the finish line.

Thank you for your support and being with me on this journey.

    With warm aloha,

    Tulsi
