Abstract
It is well-established that cannabinoids exert palliative effects on some cancer-associated symptoms. In addition evidences obtained during the last fifteen years support that these compounds can reduce tumor growth in animal models of cancer. Cannabinoids have been shown to activate an ER-stress related pathway that leads to the stimulation of autophagy-mediated cancer cell death. In addition, cannabinoids inhibit tumor angiogenesis and decrease cancer cell migration. The mechanisms of resistance to cannabinoid anticancer action as well as the possible strategies to develop cannabinoid-based combinational therapies to fight cancer have also started to be explored. In this review we will summarize these observations (that have already helped to set the bases for the development of the first clinical studies to investigate the potential clinical benefit of using cannabinoids in anticancer therapies) and will discuss the possible future avenues of research in this area.

Cannabis sativa comes in a male and female form. The male form is Hemp and the female form is marijuana. Hemp has been used for food and materials for thousands of years and contains virtually no THC, the most active chemical compound in marijuna that gives one a “high.” One cannot get high on hemp. Making hemp illegal would be like making poppy seeds illegal, since they can be grown to make opium or heroin, except that poppy crops aren’t nearly as useful and can make a much more dangerous drug.

Fear of marijuana
During the Great Depression, massive unemployment increased public resentment and fear of Mexican immigrants, escalating public and governmental concern about the problem of marijuana. This instigated a flurry of research which linked the use of marijuana with violence, crime and other socially deviant behaviors, primarily committed by “racially inferior” or underclass communities. By 1931, 29 states had outlawed marijuana.

1916 – 1937 William Randolph Hearst’s newspapers introduced the word ‘marijuana’ into English from Mexican slang.
Hearst sold lots of newspapers using stories about “coloured” men using drugs to corrupt white women. Many of them allegedly carried big knives and would go wild at any provocation. New techniques for processing hemp for paper that pose a serious threat to his timber based paper businesses provide the motivation.

Unfortunately in 1930s the production of Hemp was banned by the United States Government, under the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act. Hemp fails under the act because it contains low levels of THC, which is a psychoactive ingredient found in hashish and marijuana (hemp does not contain an amount to produce any intoxicating effect, even in significant quantities). According to Jack Herer’s book “The Emperor Wears No Clothes” the biggest supporter of the ban account was William Randolph Hearst, who coincidently had significant interest in the timber industry at the time. “In 1916 a USDA Bulletin (#404), reported that one acre of cannabis hemp, in annual rotation over a 20-year period, would produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees being cut down over the same 20-year period. This process would use only 1/4 to 1/7 as much polluting sulfur-based acid chemicals to break down the glue-like lignin that binds the fibers of the pulp, or even none at all using soda ash. The problem of dioxin contamination of rivers is avoided in the hemp paper making process, which does not need to use chlorine bleach (as the wood pulp paper making process requires) but instead safely substitutes hydrogen peroxide in the bleaching process. If the new (1916) hemp pulp paper process were legal today, it would soon replace about 70% of all wood pulp paper, including computer printout paper, corrugated boxes and paper bags.”

The first is a short, to-the-point bipartisan bill to remove marijuana from the Controlled Substances Act so that states can set their own laws without interference.
The second requires the federal government to generate one central study on the impact of state marijuana legalization policies to push back against myths and stigma that are being used as excuses to perpetuate federal prohibition.

I didn’t suddenly wake up to this issue yesterday. The truth is, I don’t smoke pot and never have. I’m not here trying to look cool. I’m here to get things done for the good of the American people. I’m here to stand up for every person’s freedom to make their own choices.
60% of voters support marijuana legalization. If members of Congress and leaders in Washington listen to the voices of the vast majority of Americans, they will hear the calls for action that go beyond partisanship. We are long overdue to bring about this kind of change. We can’t afford to keep kicking this can down the road given the devastating negative impact it is having on the people of this country.
